Nethood /
FrequentlyAskedQuestionsWhat is NetHood and what is new about it? We are not sure yet. NetHood will try to build on ideas by related projects (like i-neighbors), operational hybrid communities (like MeetUp), grassroots community networks (like athens wireless, guifi, freifunk, etc.) in order to help people communicate with their neighbors and share resources, content, and their physical presence. As a first step we wish to add our voice in this thread of research and practice starting by helping in the categorization and clarification of the different concepts and their interdependence. Then we wish to study how combining different network technologies and best practices can result in more attractive and efficient nethood communities in different environments. Most notably, we plan to study the design of hybrid neighborhood communities on top of self-organized wireless networks and/or peer-to-peer information management systems that will ensure a higher level of independence. As a site it could be from just a collection of ideas and projects to a hybrid community itself. Time will decide ... A short explanation of our logo How can I contribute? For the moment, you can add links to projects that you think that are related in the corresponding category. Tell us what you think, what you like, what you don't like. Tell us about you and your neighbors. What would you like to do or discuss with them? What not? But can this vision really come true? It seems rather utopian! Some day it will. Maybe not for every neighborhood in the world, but even some of them profit it is enough ... Is it risky? I don't feel comfortable losing my anonymity in the neighborhood There is a risk involved with any new form of organization and any interaction with not known human beings. But safe things are in general boring. Don't you agree? What will the government say? Some governments would support a nethood under certain assumptions, while others will definitely fight against it. But nethood is not about politics. It is about everyday life and long-term visions for the neighborhood. It is about getting out of the house and live with the people around you. Ask your parents :-) What if I still don't want to have any relationship with my neighbors? Then you are in the wrong place.
