Logo disambiguation:

Originally Nethood comes from the works NETwork and NeighborHOOD referring to a hybrid virtual community bridging the virtual with the physical space. Wikipedia provides numerous other uses of the word hood, some of which are directly related to our context and could lead to misunderstandings. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hood

For example, "hood" in american slang could refer to a ghetto which can be described as a "portion of a city in which members of a minority group live; especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure." and has in general a negative meaning. Our ideal community is the opposite of a ghetto but we do wish to build communities that respect difference not by "absorbing" it into a uniform system but by "accepting" it and building on it. This is the biggest challenge that we wish to address.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hood_(headgear) Another interesting connection is the hood as "a kind of headgear that covers most of the head and neck and sometimes the face". This meaning is interesting since it brings to our mind the concepts of privacy and anonymity, which are widely accepted as a threat in the virtual world. On the one hand, anonymity creates insecurity [MyStreet]. On the other hand, privacy is a strong requirement in a hybrid community especially because people with who we interact in this context are in physical proximity.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hood_(comics) The Hood as a comics character first appeared in his own self-titled MAX limited series in 2002 which featured his origin, as a character who had a cloak and boots stolen from a Nisanti demon, which granted him invisibility a and limited levitation respectively. We like this connection since we imagine a virtual community as trying to "visualize" the invisible part of a neighborhood. Its soul ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Hood Finally, is an heroic outlaw in English folklore. A highly skilled archer and swordsman, he is known for "robbing from the rich and giving to the poor," assisted by a group of fellow outlaws known as his "Merry Men." Robin and many of his men wore Lincoln greenclothes. Nethood is certainly on the side of grassroots, self-organized communities and against "one size fits all" commercial projects like ... To his end, Robin Hood is our hero and we might consider build our logo around his legends :-)
